“Join the Haifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council and our social movement allies to celebrate International Women’s Day 2016 in Halifax on March 8th at 5:30 pm at Grand Parade, in front of city hall. There will be music, hot chocolate, speeches and more.
International Women’s Day is a socialist holiday, started in 1909, to remember a strike by working women in New York who were members of International Ladies Garment Workers Union. Since then it has spread all around the world.
International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements that have been won in the struggle for equality and focuses on the next steps.
This year, the Labour Council calls for action on key priorities including:
– Restoring funding …to Women’s Employment Centres across Nova Scotia which have been cut by the Stephen McNeil Liberals
– Making sure the inquiry for Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women leads to change
– Addressing challenges faced by transwomen in employment and health care
– Creating a national child care and early childhood education system
– Ending cuts to education, health care and social services
– A $15 minimum wage
