Conciliation, Day of Action and Picket Captains Wanted!

After ten days of bargaining with the Government of Nova Scotia over eleven months, we have not been able to reach an agreement that secures significant wage increases for our members.

We’ve filed for conciliation in the hope that a third party can help refocus the government and education bosses on getting a fair collective agreement done. Rick Rose, who has worked with CUPE members before, has been appointed as our conciliator. We will notify you when dates for conciliation are finalized.

In the meantime, we need to increase pressure on the government by telling our stories to the community. That’s why we are holding an Education Worker Day of Action on February 28th. CUPE Education workers across the province will wear pink armbands along with NSSBCU lanyards to show government and the public that we will not accept the disrespect we’ve been shown any longer. This province-wide coordinated action will help us get media attention, where we can make sure our message reaches an even wider audience. All site contacts will receive their arm bands by Tuesday morning.

Make sure you’re following Local 5047 and the NSSBCU on social media so you can share our stories with your community.

Update – January 17, 2023

Good evening all,

Please see this as a brief update and reminder of upcoming events for our Local.

We would like to thank all members who were able to come out and vote for a Strike Mandate over the last week and a half. Again, we are not yet in a position to discuss numbers, we have not started to count the ballots cast yet. Due to numerous members who had contracted COVID, who were very ill and many who had not been able to receive our emails for one reason or another, additional times were created for all to have the best opportunity to come out and vote.

In person voting continues tomorrow evening. We anticipate this being the last time for members to be able to vote. We welcome all who have not voted as of yet, from any of our classifications, term or permanent. And new hires are encouraged to come out as well!

So, tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18, 2023 in person voting will be held at the Sackville Legion Branch 162 (45 Sackville Cross Road, Lower Sackville B4C 2M2) from 4:15pm to 7:45pm.

We can not accept voting by proxy, online or via email.

We continue to add to our email list, however, we have hit a technical snag, so we are again asking our Site Contacts – Please share this email with your co-workers. There will be a post to the Local’s website and Facebook page as well.

A reminder, bargaining continues with government on Monday January 23 and Tuesday January 24, so again we ask you to wear your pink or fuchsia in support! All Locals across the province will be as well!

Finally, we will send out any urgent updates, and meeting times or links soon! As well, we commit to providing plenty of time and information surrounding Strike Schools and Education should situations deem that suitable!
