CUPE NS Convention recap from Day 1 and Day 2

Local 5047 members have been busy attending informative sessions throughout the first two days of Convention.

Last night, Convention was called to order at 7:00pm where members listened to many reports from the CUPE NS Executive Board and shared a moment of silence for all CUPE members who have lost their lives this past year, honouring 3 of our own members. Members had the honour of hearing from Danny Cavanaugh from Nova Scotia Federation of Labour before day one came to an end.

Today, members had the opportunity to participating in a morning Smudge from CUPE NS Young Workers VP Ty Loppie and CAMIC member Kim Loppie, both are members of CUPE 1082. Convention was called to order at 9:00am with a toast to public water.

Members had the privilege to hear from CUPE NS President Nan McFadgen, giving her last President report, as she will be retiring in the coming days.

The CUPE Nova Scotia Betty Jean Sutherland Sister of the Year Award endeavors to recognize a union sister who has proven their dedication to the Labour Movement specifically in advancing Equality Rights for women. A sister who embodies the principles that Betty Jean lived by. Our very own, Kristin Welbourn was nominated and received this award.

CUPE National President Mark Hancock gave an uplifting speech and reminded the delegates of the importance of our solidarity as members within our local, and as a part of CUPE.

Convention includes work of the delegates who attend, meaning they listen to Constitutions and Resolutions that locals and committees have brought forward. Members were put to work today in listening to a total of 13  Constitutions or Resolutions; carried 11, defeated 1, and referred 1 back to the committee.

To end Day 2, members will enjoy a social, banquet, and dance this evening with other CUPE locals, CUPE Staff across the country, and guests.
